How We Rank

Every buying guide should tell you how its picks were chosen. Here is exactly how ours are — and, just as importantly, what they are not.

What our rankings are based on

• EPA registration and the product label. We check that a pesticide is EPA-registered for the pest and site you are treating, and we read the actual label — active ingredient, approved uses, application rate, and the safety directions — not the marketing copy.
• Active ingredient and mode of action. We research what the active ingredient is and how it works, because that is what decides whether a product suits a given pest, how fast it acts, and whether resistance is likely.
• Extension and published efficacy data. Where university extension programs, EPA data, or published studies report how well an approach works, we weigh that evidence over a brand's claims.
• Aggregated owner feedback. We look at how large numbers of real owners rate and describe a product over time — what actually knocks the pest down, what fails, and in which settings.
• Fit for the pest and the setting. The best pick for German cockroaches, ants, bed bugs, or mice is rarely the same product, and indoor, outdoor, kitchen and kids-or-pets-present situations all change the answer — so we rank for who and what a product is actually right for.
• Safety screening. We flag products with a view to people, pets, and pollinators, and we note when a label restricts use around food, children, or bees.
• Track record. A long, consistent history of satisfied owners counts for more than a brand-new listing with little to go on.

What our rankings are NOT

• Not first-hand lab testing. We do not run a lab, hold pesticide-applicator licenses, or test every product on a live infestation, and we never pretend we did. Our picks are built from EPA labels, active-ingredient and efficacy research, and owner consensus — and we say so plainly on the guide.
• Not pay-for-placement. No brand can buy a ranking, a badge, or a spot on a list. Rankings are editorial.
• Not driven by commission. We earn a commission when you buy through our links (see our Affiliate Disclosure), but that never changes the order of a list. A cheaper pick often ranks above a pricier one.
