Two products that look like direct competitors on the shelf can share the exact same active at the same concentration, which means you are choosing between a premium label and a cheaper one that do the identical thing. Just as often, a product aimed at "insects" contains an active that is genuinely effective against one order of insect and close to useless against the pest you actually have. So my research always starts by naming the chemistry, then asking whether that chemistry matches the target on the label.
Mode of action is the part that predicts results
Knowing the active ingredient is only useful once you know its mode of action — how it actually kills or disrupts the pest. That single piece of biology explains most of what a homeowner experiences. Pyrethroids interfere with insect nerve signalling and tend to knock down on contact, which looks satisfying but says nothing about lasting control. Neonicotinoids like imidacloprid act on the insect nervous system differently and behave as slower, systemic-style actives. Insect growth regulators such as pyriproxyfen and methoprene don't kill adults at all — they stop immature insects from developing, which is why they shine against fleas and roaches over weeks but disappoint anyone expecting an instant result. Boric acid and fipronil are slow by design in baits, because the goal is for a foraging insect to carry the dose back and share it through the colony before it dies. Diatomaceous earth is purely physical: it works dry by damaging the insect's outer layer, and it stops working the moment it gets damp. Match the mode of action to what you need — fast knockdown, residual control, or colony elimination — and most of the "it didn't work" complaints resolve into "it was never designed to do that."
What EPA registration does and doesn't prove
I check EPA registration on every product, and I am careful about what it means. A federal registration number on the label tells you the EPA reviewed the product for use as directed and that the pests you see on the label are ones it is legally sold to control. That is a real bar, and I note when a product clears it. What it is not is a guarantee that the product is the best, or even a good, choice for your specific situation — registration reviews the label, it does not crown a winner. I also flag the nuance that some minimum-risk products are exempt from federal registration under a provision of the pesticide law, so "not EPA-registered" doesn't automatically mean "illegal" — but it does mean those efficacy claims never went through the same review, and I weight them accordingly. When a product makes a pest-control promise with no registration and no exemption behind it, that is a flag, not a feature.
Efficacy evidence versus marketing copy
Separating what works from what sells is most of the job. "Kills on contact" and "kills the entire colony" are describing completely different mechanisms, and a product that does the first often cannot do the second. "Kills 99% of household bugs" is a sentence engineered to be unfalsifiable. So I go looking for the substance behind the slogan: is there real efficacy data, was it a controlled study or a promotional demonstration, how many insects and under what conditions, and — critically — who paid for it. A manufacturer's own lab result under ideal conditions is a starting point, not a verdict, because a real home has harborage, humidity, and a population that regenerates. Where independent extension trials exist, I trust those far more than a glossy chart, because extension researchers have no product to move. When the only evidence is the seller's own marketing, I say so and rank the claim as unproven rather than false — but unproven is exactly what the reader needs to know.
Resistance, and why a product that once worked stops
One of the most common real-world failures I write about is not a bad product but resistance. Insect populations under repeated pressure from the same chemistry can shift toward individuals that survive it, and those survivors breed. Pyrethroid resistance in bed bugs and in German cockroaches is well documented, which is why a spray that flattened an infestation for one household barely dents another. This is why I care so much about mode of action: rotating between genuinely different modes, rather than buying three products that are secretly the same class, is how you avoid selecting for a population you can't touch. When a reader tells me a product "used to work and now doesn't," resistance is one of the first things I consider, alongside the far more common problem of the product simply being applied wrong.
Safety screening: pets, children, and pollinators
No efficacy result matters if the product isn't safe to use the way a household actually lives, so every product I research goes through a safety screen before I would recommend it. I read the signal word — Caution, Warning, or Danger — as a quick grade of acute hazard, then I read the precautionary statements in full. For homes with pets or small children I look hard at what the label says to keep them away from and for how long, because the re-entry guidance is not optional fine print. For anything used outdoors I check the pollinator language: many insecticides, imidacloprid among them, are hazardous to bees, and the label's direction not to apply to blooming plants or where bees are foraging exists for a real reason. A product can be effective and still be the wrong choice for a particular home, and I would rather point someone to a bait station in a locked housing than a broadcast spray around kids and a dog. One furious one-star review usually tells you about a shipping problem or a misapplied product, not about efficacy. What I hunt for is repetition across many independent reviews: the same pest named again and again as unaffected, the same complaint that it worked for two weeks and then failed, the same note that the sprayer clogs or the bait dries out. I mentally separate the reviews that describe using the product correctly from the many that describe misuse, because a bait sprayed over with cleaner or applied where the pest doesn't travel will "fail" no matter how good it is. A cluster of specific, consistent, correct-use reports is a real signal; a pile of vague five-star praise with no detail is close to noise. Sceptical by default, thorough by habit — I would rather tell a reader the honest, boring truth about what a product will and won't do tonight than hand them a confident promise the evidence can't support.
